Question # 1237

Hey Curtis,

Out here in Maryland, the temperatures do not get too low, but today hit the 20's without wind chill. I just got the Duralite Battery Setup with the 4000 mah Pack in my Raptor 90, running all digital servos.

It seems like in the beginning of my flight, when the battery pack is cold, the helicopter stops listening to all inputs and pretty much falls out of the sky, then I have control once again. It does this for just a few seconds until the battery warms up (or so it seems). Is this a battery problem related to temperature? Is it so cold that the battery cannot support the current that my digital servos are drawing, or should I look elsewhere for a problem?

Thanks again,
Bobby Watts

Answer

Unfortunately, I have no experience with the duralites in temperatures below about 40 degrees.

You could test them by putting them in the freezer at home and seeing if they still work. You could do this with the rest of your radio equipment component by component to see if there are any problems.

I would not be too surprized if something in the radio has problems at lower temperatures. At least 99% of our flight testing on equipment happens at temperatures above freezing.
